Welcome back, everyone! We can’t believe it’s already September!
This month, we’re taking a closer look at our work with First Nations communities and the relationships we’ve had the privilege of building along the way. Our team has truly enjoyed working alongside these tight-knit communities and learning from the people we’ve met through each project.
Lending a hand in these communities is about much more than showing up, building something, and heading home. It’s about getting to know the people, listening to what they need, learning about their communities, and building the kind of trust that takes time.
So, without further ado, let’s get into it!
UNDERSTANDING THE COMMUNITY BEFORE BUILDING
Before we ever begin a project, we believe it’s important to take the time to understand the community we’re working with. This starts with us sitting down with the housing team, having a conversation, and learning what matters most to them.
We talk about everything from the needs of Elders and where they live to the community’s traditional territory and long-term plans. Looking ahead 10 or 15 years helps us understand not just what a community needs today, but where they want to go in the future.
Taking the time to listen first allows us to approach each project with a better understanding of the people and community we’re building alongside.
RESPECTING THE LAND, CULTURE & HISTORY
Every First Nations community has its own history, traditions, and connection to the land, and understanding that is an important part of working together. Throughout a project, we stay in close communication with the community to make sure that their cultural heritage is respected in every step of the way.
Before major excavation begins, for example, some communities may have members come out to the site to look for areas of cultural or historical significance. These conversations and checks help ensure that construction moves forward responsibly and with respect for the land.
For us, it comes down to mutual respect. We bring our construction knowledge and experience to the table, while taking the time to listen, learn, and respect the heritage and traditions of the communities we work alongside.
BUILDING AROUND COMMUNITY NEEDS
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that every community has different priorities, goals, and ways of living. Rather than telling communities what they should build, our role is to provide guidance, share our experience, and help them understand the long-term benefits and challenges of different options.
Many First Nations communities are very family-oriented, and that often influences how homes and community spaces are designed. In some cases, projects are planned around shared gathering spaces that bring families together while still providing private living areas for individuals and households.
By listening to the community and understanding how people live, our team can help create solutions that are practical and tailored to their unique needs.
THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST BEYOND THE PROJECT
After working with so many different communities over the years, many of the people we’ve met have become lifelong friends of ours.
There’s also a wonderful sense of hospitality that comes with visiting these communities. Whether it’s sitting down for a conversation, sharing a meal, or simply spending time together, those moments are just as memorable as the work itself.
We’ve been welcomed with incredible kindness, and it’s something we never take for granted.
