When Is It Time to Upgrade or Expand Your Home?

Happy August everyone! We hope you are all having a great summer thus far; we definitely are!

We’ve been working on some beautiful custom home projects here on the island, which is why we decided to make this month’s blog about when the best time is to upgrade and expand your home.

It’s been our most asked question so far this summer, and it’s a great question!

Here are eight indicators from what we see with our clients of when to know when the best time to upgrade and expand your home is.

GROWING FAMILY AND CHANGING NEEDS

As you and your family grow older, space can become an issue where you need more of it, or on the flip side, maybe your partner or someone in the family now has a work from home job and needs an extra office/workspace. Regardless of what renovation or change you need, our professionals will make it happen.

SPACE CONSTRAINTS

We can all relate to this one; when you live in a house for many years, you start to accumulate, which can make storage and space a bit of an issue. Property extensions are one of our specialties to properties from attic/basement conversions, bump-outs, sunrooms, detached accessory dwelling units, second-story additions, and more!

LIFESTYLE UPGRADES

New technology arises every year, and we always tend to want more as people, so investing in home renovations can give you the lifestyle upgrade you’re looking for. Some popular upgrades this year have been new decks and patios, enhanced kitchen storage, cool roofing, radiant-heat flooring, and zero threshold showers.

OUTDATED FEATURES

Sometimes we just look at that one room, wall, floor, or part of the house, cringe, then mutter, “yeah, that needs to be fixed” (we’ve all been there). If this is you right now, then it’s a good tell-tale sign that it’s time to upgrade a few things or expand your home.

LACK OF FUNCTIONALITY

If you’re experiencing lack of space or functionality, it’s time to start thinking outside of the box and transforming your home to create a more functional space. Some great examples of this would be to renovate your basement/attic into a viable living space or transforming your outdoor spaces/attachments to be part of the house. Our creative minds can help you find a solution that works for your growing lifestyle; it’s what we’re known for!

INCREASING PROPERTY VALUE

This one is a very common reason for our clientele to upgrade or renovate. If you’re planning on selling in the coming years, then this is a no-brainer. Focus on the rooms that matter the most, like the kitchen, bathroom, and living room, and look at tech and energy efficiency features that you can add, as they will definitely make your home worth more.

SAFETY AND STRUCTURAL CONCERNS

It’s imperative that these upgrades are done as soon as possible because when it comes to structural and safety concerns, it endangers everyone living in the house. We’ve done ample structural renovations to properties on the island and will be able to guide you through the entire process so you can get back to living worry-free as soon as possible.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY NEEDS

In today’s world, there’s a massive demand for sustainability and energy efficiency, and in a lot of cases, if you’re looking to sell, it might not get as much attention as a property that has those features. Some great upgrades to consider are upgrading your insulation and getting professional air sealing, installing an eclectic air-source heat pump, installing solar panels, upgrading to smart locks, lights, and thermostats, and even converting your home from fossil fuels to electricity.

So there you have it, 8 indicators that it might be time to upgrade or renovate. The amazing news is, we’ve worked alongside every type of client imaginable where upgrades were made for these reasons and more.

We’re going to leave you with a PRO TIP:

Take preventative measures for your home. Don’t be reactive because otherwise you could be facing some long term and very expensive damages.
